2020-2021 Student Note Competition Winner

HNLR 2020-2021 Student Note Competition Winner: Daniel Abowd!

Daniel Abowd serves as Vice President/General Manager of the Royalty Network, Inc., an independent music publisher representing songwriters such as Bill Withers, Killer Mike, and Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes. His academic research has explored musicological and evidentiary issues in music copyright infringement litigation, the mechanics and impact of Copyright Royalty Board proceedings, and alternative dispute resolution avenues for songwriters. He earned his J.D. in 2021 as an Evening Division graduate of Fordham University School of Law. He previously received his M.A. in Music Business from New York University, and his B.A. in Music and Economics from Cornell University.

Negotiation, not adjudication, resolves most legal conflicts. However, despite the fact that dispute resolution is central to the practice of law and has become a “hot” topic in legal circles, a gap in the literature persists. “Legal negotiation” — negotiation with lawyers in the middle and legal institutions in the background — has escaped systematic analysis.

The Harvard Negotiation Law Review works to close this gap by providing a forum in which scholars from many disciplines can discuss negotiation as it relates to law and legal institutions. It is aimed specifically at lawyers and legal scholars.
